The newsroom behind the byline — how we work, and what we hold ourselves to.
Some of what we publish carries an individual byline. Some carries this one. When a piece is signed by the editorial team it means the newsroom stands behind it collectively — not that nobody is accountable for it.
We sign this way rather than attach a name that would not mean anything.We do not invent reporters, and we do not put a person's name on work they did not do. If you see a name on this site, that person exists and did the work.
How a piece gets made
Reporting and analysis start from primary material: filings, public data, documents, and where relevant, people who will talk to us. A draft is written, checked against that material, and read again before it goes out. Where a specific person edited or verified a piece, their name appears on it, beneath the byline.
Where no such name appears, no separate editor or fact-checker was involved — we would rather leave that line off than fill it in for appearances.
How we verify
Numbers must be traceable to a source a reader could find. We do not publish statistics we cannot point at, and we do not describe analysis as fieldwork. The detail is in ourfact-checking policy.
How we use AI
We use it in drafting, research and production, and a person is accountable for everything published. It is never allowed to originate facts, quotes or sources. We set this out in full — including what we will not do — inhow we use AI.
When we are wrong
We correct it and we say so. Errors are disclosed rather than quietly edited away, and we have removed our own work rather than leave something up that we could not stand behind. See ourcorrections policy.
